Chetumal, a city of about 250,000 has many services such
as a modern shopping mall, Sam's Club, University of Quintana Roo and it
is the State Capitol. It has a fabulous museum of the Maya. Chetumal is
only 30 minutes south of Bacalar on a new highway.
The Caribbean Ocean and cruise port of Mahahual and fishing
village of Xcalak are a little over an hour north and east of Bacalar.
While there are many exquisite Mayan ruins in the area, Kohunlich
is truly one of the finest and a must see. It is only about 45 minutes
southwest of Bacalar.
